I can’t say enough about the privilege it has been working with this incredibly talented group. Dancers seem to have the artistic ability to jump off the page in a photograph and say here’s my soul (which we as photographers love!) But more importantly I feel they have something to say. Hula meant something to ancient Hawaiians and was a valuable expression and communication. It’s kept alive today (barely) by people that feel the tradition is much more valuable perpetuated because it keeps a culture alive that steeps itself in an identity only found here in the islands. Cultural traditions this small are very difficult to perpetuate because of our lifestyle and the prolific influence of worldwide popular culture. The ancient hula has been passed to only a select few. Na Maka O Puuwai Aloha aims to perpetuate and teach young, and old, the art the way it was meant to be shared…
